The Burgh Defenders are a new team this season in the American Arena League (AAL). The Defenders are owned by Tjuan Benefactor, a local Pittsburgh rapper and personality. Benefactor is the owner of a basketball team in Pittsburgh as well, the Steel City Yellow Jackets. He always loves implementing sports into the Pittsburgh area anyway he can.
The Defenders play in the Printscape Arena at Southpointe in Canonsburg, Pennslyvania. If you’re a fellow Pittsburgher, you may know it as its former name the Iceoplex which formerly was the home to the Pittsburgh Penguins practices. The team was originally set to have home games at the Robert Morris University arena on Neville Island, but I suppose things didn’t work out.
The first game the Defenders played was against league juggernaut, the West Virginia Roughriders. The Defenders were in for a rough ride losing 95-18. Which I mean there is no sugar coating that it was a blowout, but believe it, or not all was bad. Receiver Alex Noble looked good anytime he was targeted. Being optimistic, the Defenders can only improve from that tough loss!
The Roughriders were probably the worst team to open up against too because they have tons of high league talent some guys with NFL experience and a superb amount of big school talent.
Back to wide receiver, Alex Noble, he is really talented and always striving to improve. You always see him practicing or in the gym every day on his Instagram page. He goes out on the field plays his heart out too, whether it be on the field or in the gym he is always grinding. I think that is what a Defender is all about.
The Burgh Defenders should bring defensive back, AJ Bowen back up to the main roster because they are having lots of trouble on defense especially in the secondary. Bowen is a shutdown defensive back, and he would be a massive asset. After seeing Bowen’s film, he plays with tons of heart, and there is no reason he shouldn’t be on the pro team instead of their minor league team the Beaver County Reapers.
Next game which was this past Saturday, the home opener was also a tough loss to the New England Bobcats. 68-30 the Defenders fell, but at least they are improving on the point spread.
This weeks game is on Friday at 7:00 PM at home once again. This time against the Jersey Flight. If the Defenders can all put their heads together and forge together, they can take down the Flight. All the Defenders need is a taste of victory, and I believe they will be looking a lot better.
Arena Football is back in Pittsburgh after four years since the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League went defunct. Although the Defenders are not in downtown Pittsburgh, they are in the town of Canonsburg around a half hour from the city; nevertheless, it’s a great feeling to have Arena Football back in the Burgh, so let’s Defend the Burgh!
