UAB Welcomes Home a Favorite Son

Andy Kennedy

After Rob Ehsan was fired last Friday, local attention immediately fell on Andy Kennedy. The former Ole Miss Head Coach, and UAB alum, agreed to a six-year deal with UAB on Thursday.

UAB has grown rapidly since Gene Bartow began the program in 1978. UAB was barely a campus and had no basketball facility in 1978. However, Bartow led the Blazers to seven NCAA tournament appearances in the 1980s, including multiple Elite 8 and Sweet 16 appearances.

The basketball program has struggled to return to the days of conference championships and consistent NCAA tournament appearances. However, UAB may have found the man who can lead the program back to the NCAA tournament.

After beginning his head coaching career at Cincinnati, Kennedy was hired at Ole Miss, where he led the Rebels to multiple SEC West Championships and NCAA tournament appearances in 12 years. Kennedy was named SEC Coach of the Year in 2017.

After parting ways with Olemiss, Kennedy was hired as a commentator by ESPN. Kennedy has spent the last two years in that role with ESPN. Andy Kennedy is well respected in both coaching and media circles.
