On March 11th, 2020 Adam Silver had to make one of the hardest decisions he made this year. Silver made the decision to suspend the NBA season effective immediately. This was a huge decision, however, it was the right one. The league is looking out for the safety of the players.
The NBA was originally going to continue the season without fans. The coronavirus has been spreading rapidly across the world. The coronavirus has officially hit the NBA. Rudy Gobert tested positive for the coronavirus late Wednesday now. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Jazz star Donovan Mitchell also contracted the coronavirus. Gobert was reportedly “careless” in the locker room as he touched teammates and belongings. Due to players getting the virus, the entire NBA season has been suspended. Fans started to blame Gobert for the season suspension.
The coronavirus has not only affected the NBA, but other major leagues have either ended or postponed their seasons. The following leagues that are ended this year are the following;
- NBA (suspended)
- MLB (suspended)
- NHL (suspended)
- XFL (suspended)
- MLS (suspended)
- Masters (postponed)
- Premier League (suspended)
- NFL canceled league meeting
The NBA was originally suspended their season for an indefinite amount of time. However, the NBA twitter page tweeted a letter from the NBA Commission Adam Silver, saying the league “hiatus will last at least 30 days and they intend to resume the season, if and when it becomes safe for all concerned”. In more unfortunate news, the 2020 Men and Women NCAA College Basketball tournaments have been canceled. Basketball has officially come to a halt. The Coronavirus has officially caused the world of sports to come to a complete stop. At this moment, the tournament will not be rescheduled.
