This evening, the DC Defenders signed quarterback CJ Collins off of the team 9 roster. Collins played his college football at an NAIA school, Southwestern Assemblies of God.
Collins was with the Green Bay Packers during rookie mini-camp but was released due to the Packers quarterback depth.
Fellow Defenders QB’s
He will join Cardale Jones, starter, and Ohio State stand-out. Also, Tyree Jackson, the former Buffalo Bulls QB. The Defenders needed another quarterback because Cardale Jones wasn’t shaping up as planned, and Jackson has a bit to go in the lines of experience.
Jones seems to have a little bit of an attitude problem when the team is down or having a rough drive. This could because he never lost a game in his Ohio State career as a start, and his first pro start, he was 13-0.
Collins will be a good fit, he has a good arm, and he’s a big quarterback 6”6 230 lbs. The Defenders like the big strong quarterbacks, so he will fit the mold very nicely.
Is Matt Elam the Reason?
This signing does come off of that Matt Elam release earlier in the week, so the roster is back at the number it should be. Elam was coming off a huge game with ten tackles, but his legal issues are what most likely turned the team away from him.
Will He Have Immediate Impact?
There is a good chance he will get some action, coach Pep Hamilton already likes running that occasional two-quarterback system with Tyree Jackson and Cardale Jones, so why not let CJ Collins go out and sling it a few times and prove why he is starting caliber in the XFL.
