The Burgh Defenders fell again on Saturday night against the Jersey Flight 56-12. The Defenders did look like they made some improvements so far but are still far from perfect.
Poppy Montega was a much-needed improvement at quarterback. Montega is a huge dual-threat quarterback, he broke a couple of runs, and I thought he was taking them to the house. He also throws a pretty accurate football, such as his first pro touchdown pass that he put over the Flight cornerbacks head for a touchdown The offensive line breaks open so easy other than Zach Bergstresser, he was going up against a defensive tackle who was billed at 6″8 I believe, and he handled him extraordinarily well.
I hope that Poppy Montega stays as the long term Defenders quarterback. He seems like the best leader out of all the quarterbacks under center for the Defenders this season. He has a great love for the game and loves to compete, and he leaves it all out on the field.
The Defenders lost Ben Mctoy because he signed with the West Virginia Roughriders. He was a very much underrated piece of the defense. I wish him the best with the Roughriders. Assuming the Defenders will sign someone to take his place for the final game so they can be at the roster limit.
The Defenders will play their last game against the Indianapolis Enforcers on May 25. There also had a June 1st game scheduled with the New England Bobcats, but the Bobcats are now defunct. If the Burgh can win the last game of the season, it could spark something. I hope the Burgh is here to stay and not another arena team that stays a year and closes up shop. Arena football is great to have back in the area.
