UC Davis Aggies take on the No. 1 ranked team in FCS, the North Dakota State Bison, the Aggies are currently ranked No. 4. UC Davis enters the game 2 -1, their only loss was to the California Golden Bears 27-13 in their season opener. In week two the Aggies, snuck by the San Diego 38-35. Last week in their home opener, The Aggies beat Lehigh 41-13.
Playing North Dakota State is a big challenge for UC Davis. The Bison’s has outscored their opponents 142-39 so far this season. North Dakota State averages 8.1 yards per play, and they love to run the ball.
Slowing Down The Run
To compete in this game, the Aggies must be able to slow down the Bison’s running attack. North Dakota State averages 316.3 rushing yards per game so far this season. Coming into the game, UC Davis is ranked 49th in the country in stopping the run. Against the Bison’s they must improve on that number or it will be a long day for the Aggies. I think the Aggies will load up the box to stop the run and let redshirt freshman quarterback Trey Lance beat them. Lance has only thrown 50 passes in his career.
Jake Maier Must Dominate
Jake Maier will need to play big in this game. North Dakota State does a good job stopping the run, so Ulonzo Gilliam could have slow day running the ball. Maier is one of the best quarterbacks in the FCS level and was BIG Sky Conference player of the year last season. So far this season Maier has thrown for 921 yards, and six touchdown passes. In the previous two games, he has completed 77 percent of his passes. It will be up to Maier to keep UC Davis in the game and hopefully pull off the upset.
This will be an excellent game to watch, let’s see if the UC Davis front st can rise to the challenge and slow down the North Dakota state rushing attack. I feel Maier will have a great game and keep the Aggies alive.
