Bottas Takes First Victory of the Season

It was certainly Valtteri Bottas’s race! Bottas had a lightning start off the grid, and after taking the lead from pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton before turn 1, the race was over. Valtteri was lightning quick the entire race and was 20 seconds ahead of his teammate and 2018 champion Lewis Hamilton before he even took his pit stop. To cap off the amazing weekend for Bottas, he even received the new point available this year for achieving the fastest lap. Valtteri did not have a single victory last year, but he starts this year out with a bang!

Disappointing Race For Ferrari

This race was not what Ferrari was looking for. The Scuderia team was thought to be the quickest after pre-season testing in Barcelona. That was not the case in Melbourne. Ferrari was out-qualified by their rival Mercedes and finished behind both Mercedes and Max Verstappen for 4th and 5th. Sebastian Vettel places 4th for the team while Charles Leclerc finished in 5th. Fortunately for Ferarri, it is a very long season. Melbourne is hard to pass track and very bumpy compared to other tracks. Maybe this is just a fluke for Ferrari, and maybe they can place a win and a podium next race in Bahrain.

Honda Joins the Podium Once Again

Max Verstappen and the newly partnered Honda-Red Bull finished 3rd in Australia. Max had a great race including passing Sebastian Vettel and challenging and almost passing Lewis Hamilton for 2nd. This year was supposed to be the break-in year for the new engine supplier, but finishing 3rd in Melbourne is a strong sight for Honda. The Red Bull is a serious threat the win a lot of races this year after seeing how they performed in Australia. Not everything is pretty for the team though, because Pierre Gasly did not live up to expectations. In fact, Gasly finished in 11th place. With that, Gasly receives no points in the championship, which hurts the team in the constructor’s championship.
