Aggies Head To Utah To Take On The Thunderbirds

aggies thunderbirds

The UC Davis Aggies (3-4) head to Utah to take on the Southern Utah Thunderbirds (1-6). The Aggies are coming off a 48-24 victory last week against Cal Poly. UC Davis will look to ride the momentum from last week’s game down to Utah. Southern Utah lost last week to No. 5 ranked Weber State 29-14 but played them tough; it was only 7-7 at halftime. So the Thunderbirds will come to play UC Davis must be ready.

Run The Football

Southern Utah struggles to stop the run; they are ranked 24th in FCS in stopping the run. They give up 114.8 yards a game rushing. Ulonzo Gilliam had an excellent game last week, rushing for 152 yards on 22 carries. He also averaged 6.9 yards per rush and had one rushing touchdown. UC Davis should look to get Gilliam 20 plus carries again in this game with the Thunderbirds struggling run defense.

Slow Down Chris Helbig

One of the bright spots for Southern Utah is quarterback Chris Helbig. He has thrown for 1,398 yards and rushed for 177 yards so far this season. He is also completing 64.7 percent of his passes. With Helbig being a dual-threat quarterback, the Aggies defense must stay disciplined and not let Helbig make plays outside the pocket. They must make Helig remain in the pocket and make plays down the field.

Don’t Turn The Ball over

One of the keys to winning on the road is always don’t turn the ball over. The Aggies must protect the ball, turning the ball over on the road could get you in trouble. During the three-game losing streak, Aggie quarterback Jake Maier threw seven inceptions. Last week he played a clean game against Cal Poly. Maier must continue that clean play for UC Davis to dominate.

I got the Aggies winning this game 38-17, Southern Utah will keep it close early, but UC Davis’s rushing attack and quarterback Jake Maier will be too much for the Thunderbirds. A win against Southern Utah will set up a big Home game next Saturday against No. 5 Weber State.
