Keys for the Aggies Win
Jake Maier Quarterback
Jake Maier got back on track on Saturday. He threw for 359 passing yards, completed 29 of 38 passes. Maier also added two touchdowns, but he did make some mistakes throwing two interceptions. It was still an incredible performance by Maier after struggling last week against Cal.
Ulonzo Gilliam Jr. Running Back
Unlonzo Gilliam Jr. ran 21 times for 139 yards and two touchdowns. He averaged 6.4 yards per rush, and his longest run was 53 yards. Gilliam Jr. is off to a good start this season. Hopefully, he can keep it going next week.
Aggies Receiving Core
Wes Preece led the Aggies in receiving yards with 118 on five catches. He averaged 23.6 yards per catch. He was making plays deep down the field for the Aggies. Jared Harrell had a solid game as well catching eight passes for 88 yards. Also, Harrell adding a touchdown catch. Lastly, Cason Crawford caught a touchdown pass and had 86 receiving yards as well. Jake Maier did an excellent job spreading the ball two different receivers.
The defense gave up 35 points, but they caused some critical turnovers in the Aggies win. Jordan Perryman had four tackles and an interception. He also created the fumble that helped UC Davis win the game. Devon King pitched in as well with six tackles and an interception. James Scharetg had the lone sack for the Aggies defense; he also added four tackles and one for a loss.
It was an excellent win for the Aggies; they beat a San Deigo team that has not lost at home in five years. The Aggies offensive line did a great job keeping Maier clean; they only gave up one sack. Maier had a lot of time to pass and go through all his progressions on offense.
The defense must play better. They forced turnovers and played pretty solid against the run, but Sinnett had to much time to pass as well. The third-down defense must get better as well San Deigo converted on 11 of 16 third downs. It will be interesting to see if the Aggies can get this corrected as the season goes on.
