The NFL owners have proposed 18 games a regular season with a per-player limit of 16 games. Meaning it will be 18 game season, but each player can not play in more than 16 games. The NFL has been talking about an 18 game season for a couple of years now.

The NFL owners want the two extra games as a chance to make more revenue. People are saying with an 18 game regular season; the NFL could make up to a billion dollars a year. We all know the NFL is about making money.

The NFL Players are worried about being more exposed to injury on an 18 game schedule. With this new proposal, players would only play 16 games.  They would also get more money with an expanded season and an increase in revenue.

The big problem with this proposal is, you going to ask players to sit out for two games along the season. Star players missing games could affect playoff position and teams trying to get in the playoffs because having to start their back up quarterbacks in two games. Teams would be forced to have better depth at each position if the proposal went through.

The 18 games regular season is unrealistic; key players would not be willing to ride the bench when it is time for big games. It will be interesting to see how this transpire.

NFLPA executive DeMaurice Smith said on Friday ” I don’t see an 18-game schedule under any circumstance being in the best interest of our players, If somebody wants to make an 18-game proposal, we’ll look at it. I haven’t seen anything that makes me think that it would be good for the players.”

The NFL and NFLPA are ramping up meetings this month to get a new CBA agreement before the upcoming season. The current CBA does not expire until after the 2020 season.
