This morning the New York Jets fired their General Manager Mike Maccagnan. The Jets also fired Vice President of Player Personnel, Brian Heimerdinger. Mike Maccagnan has been the Jets GM for four years. He has been trying to rebuild the team by drafting promising quarterback Sam Darnold in 2018 and drafting Alamba’s own Quinnen Williams as their number one pick in 2019. To add to the rebuilding process, Maccagnam signed veteran pro bowler running back Le’Veon Bell.
NFL.com reporter Judy Battista mentioned that there had been rumors of a disagreement between head coach Adam Gase and Maccagnan. Battista thought “why it’s fair to resurrect the question first raised when the Jets fired Todd Bowles at the end of the 2018 season: Why go halfway? Bowles and Maccagnan were hired together four years ago and whatever successes (one, a winning record in 2011) and failures (a lot, including three straight losing seasons) they had, they had together. The roster was bad, the coaching no better. If they deserved to finish the rebuild, they deserved it together. If they didn’t, they should have been shown the door simultaneously”. Some reporters look at the firing of Maccagnan to now be unfair since he added crucial pieces to his organization.
