Forging On: Welcome to Birmingham Mr. Spurrier.

Steve Spurrier’s distaste for the state of Alabama is no secret. He has quite the history against the Crimson Tide and will now FORGE a new rivalry with the Birmingham Iron. He brings in a squad that has proven to be the best in the Alliance so far. With a high powered passing attack and strong ground game, Birmingham will be tested on all levels. The defense for the Apollos is nothing to be taken lightly either.

Apollos QB Garrett Gilbert leads the Alliance in passing yards with 1071 yards, and his top target Charles Johnson is number one as well with 410 yards receiving through just four games.

Linebacker Terrance Garvin leads the Alliance in interceptions, and there is a tie between 2 Orlando guys for 2nd in sacks with three apiece. Those fearsome dudes are the tandem of Earl Okine and Andrew Ankrah.

The Iron have some top guys themselves, however. Trent Richardson leads the Alliance with 7 TDs. LB Beniquez Brown is second in tackles, and DB Jamar Summers is tied for 2nd with two picks on the season. Birmingham has the most efficient scoring defense and a near impenetrable red zone defense. Just ask Atlanta and San Antonio.

The Iron will need the best from a patchwork Offensive line to keep QB Luis Perez upright. Perez is second in the Alliance in yards passing but has yet to toss a TD. He has however struggled against zone coverage and has thrown three interceptions in two games. Brandon Ross should get the bulk of the carries this week between the 20s as Trent Richardson has established himself as a goal line monster.

The Iron defense will need to tighten up against the rushing attack that Spurrier and Co bring to Legion Field. They allowed Kenneth Farrow to set an Alliance record last week with 30 carries for 142 yards. Something I’m sure Coaches Lewis and Minter are still fuming over. This matchup is highly anticipated and matches up well for both teams.

This has game of the year potential written all over it. I personally can’t wait to see how these two powerhouses will fare against one another. You can catch the game on TNT this Saturday at 1 PM Central time. You can also come to Legion Field and experience a fan base matched by none. #ForgeOn!
