The Memphis Express took on the San Diego Fleet, on Saturday afternoon. The Express looked hot all game behind Zach Mettenberger who brought life to this team, Hackenberg is most likely going to ride the bench into the sunset after Mettenberger gave the Express their first win. 26-23 was the final on Saturday afternoon. The Express should feed off this and keep on going!
Zach Mettenberger was indeed the answer to the Memphis Express fans prayers of a starting quarterback. The Mett scored two total touchdowns, one of which was rushing and passed for 171 yards. Mettenberger is a great leader; he brings fire and a will to win to Memphis. Mettenberger, to start, is a spectacular leader; if something goes wrong, you can see him in the huddle coaching the guy who made a mistake. By addressing the issue it helps to not make the mistake again, he tells him and usually ends with smile and pat on the helmet. That kind of leadership will do great things. I do think Mettenberger is one of the best leaders in the AAF.
Drew Jackson on defense was on fire. Fourteen total tackles, four a loss, four passes defended, one interception and one sack. He was constantly tormenting the whole Fleet offense. Jackson stepped up and made a name for himself showing he can lead the defense and make big plays happen.
I think we all could easily guess who I will highlight here. The man everyone thought would be a menace but turned out to be a dud. One hint, it’s not Hackenberg. Zac Stacy is the man; he had himself another dud game. Having 18 carries for 39 yards and averaging slightly over two yards a carry. Stacy is someone we set the standards way too high on. He is getting the carries; just the performance isn’t there.
This weekend the Express will travel to Atlanta to take on the Legends, the Legends are coming off a big upset and the first victory against the Hotshots in Arizona. Will the Legends bring the heat back home? Or will the Express chug along? Both teams are coming off their first victory. Find out my take on this in my pregame article later in the week.
