The Express Get Derailed

This Sunday afternoon the Memphis Express took on the Birmingham Iron. I had this projected to be a close match up; boy was I wrong.

The Express had nothing going for them. Christian Hackenberg should not have started as I have stated in previous articles. Zach Mettenberger should have started. They have a whole show “The Mett Show” for him, I’m sure the fans would want the Mett instead of the Hack.

More on the quarterback situation that leaves me bewildered is why was Brandon Silvers the second quarterback? I was already baffled as to why Hackenberg was number one. Mettenberger is cut from a different cloth than them. Coach Singletary needs to have a nice long talk with himself tonight and realize Hackenberg is probably not the answer, at least not now.

Headed into the fourth quarter, Hackenberg was only 7-of-18 for 54 yards and an interception. Very few drops, the rest were just poor passing attempts. He was sacked twice. He was then flagged for intentional grounding late in the third quarter and pulled for Brandon Silvers.

Luis Perez, the Iron quarterback, looked like he was back in his division II college roots. The Express defense was beaten and battered by Perez and also the underdog of the night Braeden Bowman, tight end of the Iron who made leaping over defenders look easy. Bowman later left with an injury.

In one bright spot for the Express, I would give the game ball to DeMarquis Gates, the Ole Miss linebacker, who forced both of the fumbles for them tonight. The first was recovered by former Memphis Tiger Jonathan Cook, the second by the MTSU star Jeremy Cutrer.

Zac Stacy was almost non-existent tonight as much of the offense was. Stacy went 58 yards on 12 carries. I expected much more out of him, as did everyone else.

The Express has some major thinking to do, especially Coach Singletary.

Looking ahead next week the Express take on the Hotshots of Arizona. This will be a make it or break it game for the Express. Saturday at 7 pm EST is game time.

  1. Hey just wanted to give you a quick heads up.
The text in your article seem to be running off the screen in Chrome.
I’m not sure if this is a format issue or something to do with web browser compatibility but I thought I’d post to let you know.
The design look great though! Hope you get the issue solved soon. Kudos
