This Sunday the Express will take on the Birmingham Iron. This is the first weekend ever of AAF games; all these should be some very good football. I will breakdown the gridiron matchup for this coming weekend.
Christian Hackenberg is slated as the starting quarterback of the Express. Hackenberg has shown major improvement in the preseason game for Memphis. On the opposition is Luis Perez of the Iron. Perez had some time in the preseason with the Rams but was eventually waved. Perez was a total stud in college, he balled out at the Divison II level, and he can sling the ball very well. When Perez and Hackenberg collide, I have that as an absolute battle till the end. I think this game could be the two gladiators of the AAF. I give the edge to Hackenberg because of his longer NFL tenure.
The defenses on both sides are well rounded. The Express is very great defense especially on the line, but the defensive backs will be a nightmare for Perez too. I think with Montari Hughes on the line for the Express it can make Perez have to get out of his comfort zone and scramble to avoid the 350 pounder Hughes. Hughes is very athletic for a big man and can make quarterbacks have to evade him. Both defenses match up very well, but I would give the edge to Memphis.
The kickers on both teams are both very good as well. Nick Novak of the Iron had the experience having dabbled around the NFL a long time, so he knows what it’s like to have the pro pressure. Jasper for the Express is very talented as well
coming out LSU. Either of these kickers could have the game on their leg this weekend.
Both teams will be out for the first win of either franchise, both hungry looking for something to prove. I have it coming down to a potential field goal from Josh Jasper to win it. My prediction Memphis Express 31 – Birmingham Iron 29. This indubitably will be an epic matchup in this bout Hackenberg vs. Perez.
