Matt McCrane is a kicker currently signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He does not get enough credit for his talent even though he is much better than many others at his position.
McCrane played college football for the Kansas State Wildcats. While playing at Kansas State, he only missed one extra point, converting 133 out of 134. He also went 57 for 66 in the field goal category and was all-team Big Ten selection during his senior year.
In the NFL, he has bounced between a trio of teams in his first season. First up, he went to the Arizona Cardinals after going undrafted. He ultimately had no shot to win the starting role because of the longtime veteran Phil Dawson, whom the Cardinals seem sold on. During his preseason time with the Cardinals, he did make a 54-yard field goal which made people take notice.
After getting cut by Arizona, three weeks later the Oakland Raiders signed him. In his solo game with Oakland, McCrane converted the game-winning field goal to win the game in overtime. He was later waived for Daniel Carlson.
Almost a month later the Cardinals called him back for another game. In his second stint with the Cardinals, he made all three of his extra point opportunities.
On December 28th, he received a late Christmas gift, an opportunity to play in the Steel City with the Pittsburgh Steelers. This was due to Chris Boswell struggling and later being placed on Injured Reserve. McCrane put on a clinic in the Steel City, making all three of his field goal attempts and his lone extra point. He won the game ball for the Steelers that night.
Ultimately, Matt McCrane is someone fans, and teams, need to take note of. At the moment he his still signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers which I think would be an excellent fit for him if Coach Mike Tomlin can move on from Boswell. I see McCrane as being one of the top kickers in the league in the coming years. All he needs is a team to give him full trust in the starting role.
Could Pittsburgh be that permanent home of Matt McCrane?
