Can Ilima Lei Macfarlane Become The Next Ronda Rousey?

On November 3rd, 2017 Bellator crowned it’s inaugural Women’s Flyweight World Champion. Ilima Lei Macfarlane submitted Emily Ducote in the fifth round and had the belt put around her waist.

The 10th Planet product began her MMA career at Xplode Fight Series on January 2015.  Her debut was against Katie Castro and Macfarlane won by knock out in the first round.  The fight went viral on Youtube as “soccer mom vs MMA fighter”.  The Ilimanator would go on to win her next five fights before her title bout.

Ilima Lei Macfarlane was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on April 2nd, 1990. She is one of six siblings and graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in 2013.  Her first Title defense was in The Pechanga Resort against Alexandra Lara on June 29th, 2018.  Macfarlane stopped Lara in the third round by submission.

What makes the Bellator Champion so unique is her down to earth attitude and her unique weigh in entrances and walkouts to the cage.  Her composure and ability to make fights exciting without having to trash talk her opponents is even more special.

Similarities towards Ronda Rousey as to their fighting styles and popularity outside the cage can be made. That is where the similarities end.  Ilima Lei Macfarlane shows respect to all her opponents and has a very warm personality.

Macfarlane has yet to become the superstar Rousey was in her prime, but there is still time since it doesn’t appear that Macfarlane has reached her ceiling.

Bellator recently announced they will be going to Hawaii on December 15th.  Ilima Lei Macfarlane will headline the DAZN streamed card against Valerie “Trouble” Letourneau. This will be her toughest test and the biggest name in the Flyweight Division.  A win against Latourneau could catapult the champion into superstardom in her home state and the world.

The undefeated Champion will look to put on a great performance in Hawaii and it’s sure to be an exciting night.  Lots of great fights will lead up to the main event and we can’t wait.
