Ex-heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum has been suspended for two years for testing positive for the anabolic steroid trenbolone. Werdum was scheduled to fight Oleksi Oliynyk in September before the out-of-competition sample came back positive.
Werdum has stated the positive result is a “misunderstanding” and is already in contact with both the UFC and USADA.
Werdum can return May 2020.
The Brazilian is just two years removed from holding the heavyweight title and has alternated wins and losses, having consecutive victories only once (Harris, Tybura). He won the interim title with a TKO over New Zealander Mark Hunt and unified the belt seven months later with a guillotine submission over Cain Velasquez.
At 41 years old, this seems to spell the end of Werdum’s UFC career. If this does spell the end of his career, Werdum will finish with a 23-8-1 record.
